12 Favorite Looks from 2015

2015 was the year I launched this little blog of mine. Melissa Takes Fashion has given me a space to document all my favorite mom moments (there are plenty of not-so-awesome days, too, but these don’t make it onto the blog because who has time to be photographing temper tantrums and escape artistry!). Putting together my very first end-of-the-year post is daunting, but looking back at my outfits and published content is a fun way to reflect and see exactly what I’m putting out there to you all. In my first year of blogging, I think I did a good job of showing you that busy moms can still look fashionable and fun. (Just say no to mom jeans, am I right or amIright!?!) This was my number one reason for starting this blog – to inspire other moms to remember ourselves, too, and to do what makes us feel good on occasion (which may not always center around a tiny human), and hopefully I have done a little of this.

I would have liked to show more ways to style/layer a summer dress in the fall, but to be honest, the weather here in Chicago has been crazy unseasonably warm. (I’m not mad about this, though.) I’m really excited for 2016 and you’ll see more posts dedicated to hair and beauty. I’ll show you how to adapt your closet to trends, as well as time-saving tricks for putting together edited, styled looks for the mom-on-the-go. (I’m currently eyeing this swing dress, this body-con dress, this ikat print top, this leopard calf hair heel, and this snake embossed leather clutch from the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale, going on now through January 3rd!)

I’ve always been the type of person who never wants to be complacent; instead I embrace change and seek ways to improve. If there’s anything you would like to see in 2016, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Again, thank you for stopping by here and on Instagram each and every day. Happy last week of 2015, and here’s to a new year!

4 Holiday Spots Around Chicago

Chicago. It is an incredible city and will always be my home in my heart, even though I now live in the ‘burbs. There’s two ways I get to enjoy it: during the week for my clients’ photo shoots or during the weekend with my three boys and The Giant. And now that it’s the holidays, Chicago’s calendar is adorned with many festive traditions and events – which gives me all the more reason to head into my beloved city! Even though most Santas around here head back to the North Pole by December 23 (hello, we’ve sat on the big guy’s lap at four different places in one week alone!), there are still a few holiday activities in Chicago that I can’t wait to do with my boys!

Enjoy rides at Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier.
Technically I’ve already done this with my boys once this year, but who says we can’t do it again? From rides and slides and ice-skating to colorful décor, this indoor holiday event provides hours of playtime and holiday cheer. Runs until January 10.

Chug along at the Winter Flower & Train Show at Lincoln Park Conservatory.
Now that the CTA Holiday Train schedule has completed, your train-obsessed kid will enjoy watching the model trains at Lincoln Park Conservatory wind their way through a miniature village and festive floral displays. I’m told there is even a spot that features a North Pole vignette, complete with an Elf Dormitory! Runs daily through January 2016. Free admission.

Marvel at the illuminated wonderland at ZooLights.
After checking out the Winter Flower & Train Show, head south over to Lincoln Park Zoo for a free light festival, where families can make holiday crafts, watch live ice carving and enjoy the animals. Don’t forget to warm up with hot spiced wine! Runs until January 3.

Window shop at Macy’s on State Street.
Peer into the large windows at Macy’s (this year’s theme is Santa’s Journey to the Stars) and catch a glimpse of Chicago’s renowned seasonal displays which are on par with the famed NYC windows. Available until January 10.

Happy holidays and Merry Christmas!

It’s the Little Things…

I talked on Instagram about not only loving this gorgeous weather we’re having but new shooting locations. The Spanish moss, just stunning. I know some people think they’re creepy looking but I think they’re sooooo pretty and romantic. Especially when there’s a nice breeze and the way it sways around like they’re dancing. I’ll be doing a shoot later today that I’m excited about and any guesses where we’ll be shooting? You know what else I’m excited about? Taking the kids to Legoland tomorrow. Crazy how things like Legoland gets you excited once you have kids. Seeing their faces light up is the best feeling in the world. Can’t wait!

Mauve Mist in the Sunset

Hello from Florida. Sorry I’ve been a little MIA. We’ve been enjoying the Florida weather, except for one day when it turned 70 and Floridians freaked out by whipping out their jackets and pants. Lol. The kids are loving quality time with their grandparents and their daily golf cart rides. It’s amazing how a simple ride to pick up mail can get them so excited they’re jumping up and down like we’re offering them candy. There’s something about coming down here that always get us so tired. The Giant and I can’t ever figure it out. Maybe it’s the fresh air? We find ourselves going to bed earlier and earlier. Not complaining though, we’re getting some much needed rest!

Till next time!
